You will need 2 pieces of 100% cotton or flannel cotton fabric cut each to 8.5 x 11, I use both equally but find the flannel extra cozy on the skin, but in general I don’t like flannel fabric much as the print distorts easily ( maybe its just me)
Up cycling old flannel pajamas for these are a great idea as well!
I use a printer paper as a template to cut fabric I have on hand, if I buy fabric I buy 1/4 of a yard for 2 bags, no worries if they are not exactly 8.5 x 11 when you buy it this way.
You will also need 2 pounds of flax seed per bag, you don’t want the bags filled too much, if you cut it 8.5 x 11 ( or close) 2 pounds is perfect. Here its around $1 per pound at the Bulk Food store.
Face your good sides of your cut pieces to each other and on one of the short ends mark and 2 inch gap near the center, this is were you will NOT SEW.
Sew around your fabric twice ( 3 times if you’re like me and a bit OCD) you do not want these to pop open during use, WHAT A MESS, luckily none of mine have ever, even when my silly daughter thought she would wash hers in the washer.
TIP
DO NOT WASH THESE!
I must say it was neat to see sprouts coming through the fabric once her washed bags were left on a shelf in an attempt to dry them lol.
Once you have sewn around, flip your bags inside right through the opening you left and use something to push the corners out.
Use a funnel and a small scoop to fill your bags.
Now push all the flax to the sewn end of the bag and run the entire end with the opening through your sewing machine, again 2 to 3 times to give them a good closure.
Keep them in the freezer for an ice pack for headaches and injuries, or pop them in the microwave for 3 minutes (from freezer 2 minutes if kept at room temperature) for a long lasting heat bag.
Microwaves vary so be cautious and don’t burn yourself please or little ones.

These strawberry shortcake ones were gifted to my daughter (to replace her ruined ones) and my sister in law.
