Of course you could do different characters and they will no longer be red and green.

My tree is not traditional at all and I prefer non traditional colours but not colours that are not even close to being Christmas colours
I love teal red and green together it reminds me of retro Christmas, however the 60s and 70s also had a lot of golds and pinks in their glass ornaments and that is a hard no for me.
My tree is full of ornaments that mean something to us, I’ve done the coordinated tree thing in the past and while I do agree it looks glamourous, it doesn’t give me all the feels the collection of meaningful ornaments do.
