My Hubz is such a trooper, we recently celebrated our wedding anniversary (end of October), and he made a little social media post thanking me for putting up with him, not to sound sexist or whatever the kids call it now a days lol, but he is the typical “man” they need us wives to mother them haha.
Even though I am as much, if not more, of a power tools kind of girl as any man, I admit it sure is nice to have him to help, and as my health declines, having him do things for me that I can not allows me to still do what I love.
Even though I am the one who comes up with most of these projects, I can not do them without him, So I THANK HIM for sticking with me through the SICKNESS part of our vows, and for helping me keep up my hobbies.
I love finding wood bins through out town for scraps of wood for projects, this particular weekend I was on the hunt for some to make a sleigh, with no luck Hubz suggest we use a skid from his work
I am not a fan of skids ( pallets) for one I can not lift the sawzall to take them apart, and second I’ve had bad luck with them cracking all kinds in the past.
But one Sunday morning he proceeded to take it apart for me long before I was even out of bed, did I ever tell you hubz is up before the birds!
If your like me and prefer not to take pallets apart, you can collect pieces of wood or simply buy inexpensive framing lumber. ( these were 1×4’s )
Aside from the pallet wood I had to buy a 8 ft length of 2×2 for the runners and some stain ( which I found for $1 in the mis-tints at Home Depot)
You also need inch and 1/4 screws
Four-2 inch screws ( ask around someone is bound to have 4 lol, we use all sizes all the time and keep them on hand)
We built the sleigh by building a crate minus 1 slate high on the front
Then hand sketched the curve on one side of the sleigh and used a jigsaw to cut it down, I used the pieces from cutting to sketch the same curve on the other side for cutting.
MY JIG SAW that hubz gifted me a few years ago for Christmas because my dads died on me, and that I proudly was able to do the cutting with it for this project.
The runners are cut on angles at both ends ( hubz job) then 4 smaller pieces were cut for “lifts”
Use inch and 1/4 screws to place the 4 small lift pieces onto the bottom of your sleigh along the sides -at the front and back, then position the runners on top of them and use the 2 inch screws to attach. ( I suggest always drilling pilot holes before screwing anything together, prevents the wood from cracking)
Hot gluing the small pieces on first to hold prevent them from moving is my trick.
Inside of it is a tree made from one of the pallet planks that snapped in half into triangles
The Santa is a vintage cake pan ( made in Portugal) spray painted and distressed
The bag is sewn from fabric in my stash and filled with scraps of wood to add weight and shape.
The gift at the front is from last year, a reclaimed piece painted red and simply wrapped with ribbon.
( I did add a piece of 1×4 cut on angles on the ends to the front on the runners, sorry I didn’t get a photo, think of the part on a sled that the rope is usually attached to)
The sled is also filled with branches from a few old fake trees that I took apart a few years back.

I do both. but you are right because Pallets are hard to take apart. My son and husband do that for me. Love the sleigh and that Santa pan is perfect for it. Hope you are feeling well today.
