In honour of National Button Day today I am sharing an ornament I made with buttons from my stash.
I think these have a cute vintage vibe, they remind me of fabric yo yos.
To help them keep shape and look a bit puffed, I’ve inserted a metal frozen juice lid.
I have buttons coming out of my ears, I designed these to use some of them up while adding some faux vintage ornaments to our one retro tree.
I was able to pull many green teal and red buttons in all sizes from my stash, but I have seen buttons at most dollar stores.
If you need buttons for these ornaments make your local dollar store your first stop.
I chose vintage colours but let your creativity run wild and make them in any colours you like.
I did however notice Michael’s not only did vintage Halloween this year, but a quick peek a few weeks ago revealed the same for Christmas, in these very colours!
If you don’t crochet I think these would be great made from felt, I’ve never actually made a fabric yo yo!
You can also always use cardboard circles if you don’t have the juice lids, lids from yogurt and sour cream type containers cut down I think might work nicely too.
Click on the photo below for the crochet pattern.
Do you remember your grandmother or your mother snipping the buttons off shirts that were headed for the rag basket and then collecting them in jars?
Crafters across the country utilize buttons in creative ways and are some of the best at finding new uses for old items. There are thousands of button collectors in the United States.

Love this. My mother-in-law gave me her button jar years ago, I will have to share a photo of it later. Over the years everyone has added to it, even my 80 year old aunt gave me her collection to add to the jar. I am going to need a new jar soon or I should make some button people with it.
