NATIONAL COOK FOR YOUR PET DAY

We cook a few treats here for our pets, for the dogs its mostly eggs, sweet potatoes, chicken breast and rice. The cats will get boiled chicken breast as a treat as well.

Also anytime I am chopping red peppers Lux waits patiently for some, and when I make smoothies she does the same for frozen blueberries.

In our Zoe’s last year of life she was on a 99% cooked diet of the above, now the dogs and cats have their kibble and moist food daily, with home cooked meals as a nice treat.

One thing the dogs do get weekly is not technically cooked, but homemade all the same, and they LOVE it.

I shared it back in the summer on National Ice Cream Day but am re-sharing today for National Cook For Your Pet Day.

All I need to say to them is who wants ice cream?, and they run to the deep freezer where I stock pile 2 months worth at a time lol.

ice cream

We purchased some dog ice cream from our health pet food store a few years ago for them and they were in love.

As I read the ingredients I was shocked, the base was YOGURT! unlike our feline babies who love milk but like mama can not digest dairy, K9’s can! who knew.

I looked up dog ice cream recipes and settled on adding peanut butter and bananas to the yogurt, the one from the store was similar.

I have used this recipe since our Lux was a puppy, she is 3 and half now.

Of course I am no Vet, please speak with yours, or an animal nutritionist to decide if this is a good choice for your dog. I spoke to the staff at our pet store and indeed yogurt is suggested as a great treat for dogs, bananas and peanut butter are great treats as well.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE NATURAL PEANUT BUTTER IS BEST BUT WE USE REGULAR KRAFT PB, NO MATTER WHICH YOU CHOOSE MAKE SURE THERE IS NO XYBITOL IT IS TOXIC TO ANIMALS.

DOG ICE CREAM
For smaller dogs like our chihuahua fill ice cube trays, let set then pop them into a freezer bag for perfect portions.

Who is man’s best friend?  A dog, of course!  Today’s national holiday is about doing something special for your furry best friend, but includes all pets, not just dogs!!  You love your pet, and want to provide what is best for them, so why not try to make them healthy, home cooked food?  November 1st celebrates National Cook For Your Pets Day.
