These ornament’s were inspired by Hubz and my childhood. The anticipation for Christmas morning, to find new Atari games under our trees is etched in our Christmas memories.
The ugly sweater thing, we both have received the dreaded “ugly” Christmas sweater from relatives, however we wish we had them today, we also wish we had those relatives around who loved us that much to think of us and take the time to make us a gift made with love.
As parent’s we have been lucky enough to pass the Christmas joy onto our children, all of them receiving a new video game at one Christmas or the other.
Christmas however, does not need to be about expensive gifts, in fact we have always told our children Santa brings toy shop things, all the expensive things are from mom and dad.
While we have been lucky and never had to explain why their friends received expensive gifts from Santa while they got puzzles and such, I’d not change a thing and encourage others to do the same.
My motto is the same for decor and ornaments, the memories of all the DIY ornaments our children made with us, and my favourite school made ornaments that I keep displayed carefully off the tree during the season, are what my mind has Polaroids of.
I couldn’t tell you what “theme” or “trends” for Christmas decor was in 1999, and frankly don’t care.
I use to work in a small retail store, surrounded by expensive Christmas decor and ornaments, it all flying off the shelf as soon as we displayed it.
Here and there I did grab a few pieces with my employee discount, but even all those years there, I still gathered everyone around the kitchen table to giggle with glitter in our hair, making memories that those store bought ornaments could not.
What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.” “Maybe Christmas, doesn’t come from a store.”
While these were inspired by gifts we received as children, it also shows how a balance can be made at Christmas and in everyday life.
We don’t need it all, spend a little on the gifts and DIY and frugal the rest.
Make a set for yourself, or as gifts for the retro game fans in your life.
Plastic canvas is fairly easy to learn, a great hobby to get into yourself or teach a child.

Love this post, so true, everything you wrote. I see everyone buy and buy, going into dept just to have a perfect Christmas. It is not perfect that way. Memories are the best gifts during the holidays. Sometimes I stress a little during the holidays because my husband and grown kids do not like to spend a lot like some of my cousins and extended family does, so they become a bit judgmental when we pass on expensive events and gift buying traditions that they themselves participate in. It is hard when that happens. We are trying to live a dept free life as much as possible.

My family is big and European they 100% are not like us lol, our kids are and our siblings are swaying our way very much so. Would you believe last year I announced no santa sacs this year, not for cost but because all 4 are 14plus I figured not something theyd want….I was confronted with WHAT! WHY! Those are our fave part of xmas morning! Santa sacs are only items handmade bought used or at discount stores aka dollar stores! That was the best xmas gift I could of received,to still continue to spend months collecting things for these surprise bags! They are large home made draw string bags I made many years ago

I love that idea. We fill our stockings with lots of fun little items. Those stockings with their little things are always my favorites.
