RETRO CRAFTING-SCARECROWS

While out thrifting I am always looking for retro craft magazines and patterns, I’ve not had much luck, nothing that appealed to me anyhow.
I did however come across two Quick and Easy Crafts magazines, from the 90s recently.
They were fun to flip through and see what crafters were into 25 years ago, the year I first became a mama.
This craft was in the 1994 October edition.

We didn’t follow the instructions, but if you click on the above photo I have included a scan of the magazine pages with all the instructions.
At the bottom of the page I will include a link for a print out for the pattern that I scanned and made into a printable.
We did these on Thanksgiving
I pre-cut the bodies out of thick cardboard, with a scroll saw, you can use wood for a more durable scarecrow, but cardboard keeps cost down when making nearly a dozen lol.
I designed my own hats and cut those out of cereal box cardboard. I set out markers, paint, and scrap papers to embellish them with.
We used felt for the tops, jean for the pants, scraps of fabric and ribbon for the patches on the clothes
We used tan felt for the “hay”, gluing it to the back of the sleeves and pant legs before gluing the clothes onto the body. Glue the jeans on first then the top on top of them.
We used tacky glue to attach the hay and clothes to the body, hot glue to attach the hats together and to the body.
We used sharpies and paint for the faces, which we transferred with carbon paper ( rubbing a pencil on the back works as well)
The cheeks are a bit of paint dabbed on with our fingers.
A hole punched at the top of the hat and some cotton yarn was used for a hanger.
As I say “we” did these instructions, I must confess, I am the only one who followed direction, LOL
The kids went rogue on me, and that’s ok! For a split second they honestly thought I was upset when I was making sarcastic comments and screaming NO STOP! LOL, but they saw instantly that I was joking, I should know better, these are my children and their plus one’s, they are my tribe and we beat to our own rhythm!
Even though they are not all “scarecrows” I love each and everyone of these creations, and that we all had some really good belly laughs making these! The creativity they came up with on their own amazes me too!
