One never knows what they will find while thrift shopping am I right?
At this time of the year not only am I casually browsing the thrift store for what pops out at me, I also have my eyes peeled for upcycling items for Halloween.
I would never in a million years think to look nor expect to find a real cauldron, but there she was in all her glory waiting to jump into my cart, $14.99 with discount was $10.
As you can see it has a cord, its actually a soup cauldron for small deli type soup of the days. I cut the cord off, rather hubz did, and I was off.
I uploaded the above pic to our Halloween decor group asking for ideas on how to fill it and then how to paint foam. If you don’t already know, you can not use spray paint on foam, it eats it.
I cut a piece of plywood to fit under the ring of the cauldron (it comes off) then hubz cut dollar store foam balls (the smooth white kind) in different sizes in half, we hot glued them onto the ply wood.
Everyone recommended craft acrylic paint but I wanted a more durable finish for outside so I gave the foam balls a coat of white rust paint in a water base(Tremclad) then went to home depot and got a sample pod of indoor outdoor Behr paint and painted over the white.
I drilled a hole near the back to put the “stir stick” in. The stick is a white plastic pipe that I sanded and spray painted.
I hot glued on rope and ribbon.
The little skulls, plastic eyeballs and floral are simply hot glued on.
The skeleton fish was $2 at Dollarama, I wired it under the ring.
With the label, wanting it for outdoors I had to get creative. I measured best I could and made a paper template, then once I got the right fit I cut one out from a clear salad container.
I sanded the plastic with my palm sander, then painted it with white Tremclad, rubbing it off after a minute or so to get a distressed look. I used a paint pen to trace over penciled on words and clear coated it to make it weather proof.
I think the neighborhood kids are going to get a kick out of this addition.
I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE A CAULDRON THAT THE RING CAME OFF. I AM THINKING FOR ANY THAT DOESN’T, CUT WOOD TO FIT JUST INSIDE,ADD DOWELS OR 1×2 “LEGS”, 3- SCREWED TO THE BOTTOM SHOULD HOLD IT UP WELL, THEN ADD THE FOAM BALLS,PAINT AND EXTRAS
