NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY

I have had to adapt to a life with diet changes since developing auto immune disorders, one major thing that I have had to give up has been milk.

Trust me when I say if I didn’t HAVE to I never would have, and the one day I decided a few years had gone by maybe I will try a glass of milk and see how it goes, sealed the deal for me to never ever pour myself a glass of milk again!

I can’t complain too much as far as a cold glass of milk is concerned, almond milk is as tasty to me as my enemy dairy milk.

Unfortunately cheese and ice cream substitutes are not as good on my taste buds.

Thankfully I can have cheese as long as it’s not often in a short period, but ice cream is Russian roulette!

I save enjoying some ice cream for the times I really crave it and I am safe close to home. I was never a huge ice cream lover anyhow, I am not much for sweets that often, period.

Someone in our house loves her ice cream much more then her mama, our doggo Lux.

We purchased some dog ice cream from our health pet food store a few years ago for her and she was in love.

As I read the ingredients I was shocked, the base was YOGURT! unlike our feline babies who love milk but like mama can not digest dairy, K9’s can! who knew.

I looked up dog ice cream recipes and settled on adding peanut butter and bananas to the yogurt. I have used this recipe since she was a puppy and to this day she is served it as a treat often.

Of course I am no Vet, please speak with yours, or an animal nutritionist to decide if this is a good choice for your dog. I spoke to the staff at our pet store and indeed yogurt is suggested as a great treat for dogs.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE NATURAL PEANUT BUTTER IS BEST BUT WE USE REGULAR KRAFT PB, NO MATTER WHICH YOU CHOOSE MAKE SURE THERE IS NO XYBITOL IT IS TOXIC TO ANIMALS.

IN MY OPINION DO NO USE ANY INGREDIENT WITH ANY FORM OF FAKE SUGAR, AND BY FAKE I MEAN ANYTHING OTHER THEN THE WORD SUGAR!

FOR THE YOGURT I USE THIS ASTRO PLAIN YOGURT

INGREDIENTS ARE:

Skim milk, cream, skim milk powder, active bacterial cultures.

I use my nutri-bullet for blending ( dividing some of the yogurt and the rest a bit at a time) but a regular blender can be used, you can pick up an inexpensive one at most thrift stores.

RECIPE

2 ripe bananas

4 teaspoons of Peanut Butter ( see note above)  instead of PB -1/2 cup of frozen blueberries can be used ( our dog eats them frozen as I share when I am making my smoothies)

750 ml of plain 1% or 2% yogurt

Portion containers with lids ( I bought mine at the dollar tree, If I remember correctly it was 3 for 1.25)

Mix all the ingredients well in a blender, spoon into your containers, place the lids on and freeze.

Simply remove the lid from the frozen treats and let your fur baby enjoy!

For our chihuahua we freeze part of it into ice cube trays and then once frozen store them in a freezer bag
