I often find children’s wood craft kits from Home Depot at thrift stores for a few bucks.
We use to take our 4 kids to their workshops, they make some great things with kids, and almost always free, or at least it use to be.
One of the kits I found recently was for a planter box, I decided I wanted it to be a winter arrangement with a faux tree, which I FOUND THE PERFECT ONE AT VALUE VILLAGE! For $2, it was in a heavily damaged pot but I didn’t need the pot anyhow.
I built the planter then painted it to look distressed.
You can simply build a planter or use any thrifted wood box as your base, painted or not.
Mini trees will soon be available at Michael’s and even dollar stores.
I wanted to add paper mache snowmen to the arrangement.
I used scraps of 1 inch thick wood and cut out some snowmen shapes, then drilled holes at the bottoms to glue in dowels.
Alternatively I was thinking, cut out the shapes from thick cardboard, hot gluing a few on top of each other, then pushing up into the bottom with a wooden skewer stick (pointy end)
For the paper mache I do 1 part flour to 2 parts warm water for my mix and torn newspaper pieces.
1 layer is enough for both wood and cardboard bases.
Let dry overnight before painting, I glued my foam block in the planter and pushed the snowmen into it to dry.
I painted the dried mache snowmen white, then I used a brush handle end to paint on the eyes, and then painted cardboard for the nose and hot glued it on.
I used pom poms for their buttons, painted dots work too.
I crocheted the hats but you can use scraps of fabric, baby socks, or no hats at all.
The scarves are again crocheted but fabric works well too.
I hot glued moss onto the foam then pushed the snowmen and the tree into it.
I like the mix of greenery with the white snowmen and box. You can use faux snow felt instead of moss as well.
