This entry is brought to you thanks to a Facebook group I belong to.
I have been following A Girl and A Gluegun on Pinterest and Facebook for awhile, she created a page for crafters to share all things crafty Glue Gun Groupies.
On the group I seen some Halloween trees being shared and I was reminded how much I loved mine, which I lost along with the ornaments in our flood. Last year we were exhausted by the time Fall was upon us, repairing all the damage took us from June until almost October and the tree and ornaments couldn’t be replaced in time. This year truth be told I had no intention of replacing it either, I like handmade ornaments and just couldn’t bring myself to make them again, was still heartbroken the others were damaged.
But seeing everyone else’s shares I couldn’t help but want my own again, I decided I’d make ornaments with whatever supplies I had on hand, my stash of plastic canvas, yarn and huge collection of thrifted buttons quickly became adorable ornaments.
I looked up the basic shape for the ornaments online (some cut out exactly, others I customized a bit) the patterns and use of buttons was my idea, I wanted a vintage vibe and think they didn’t disappoint.
I visited the dollar store to see what I could get cheap and work into the tree, there I picked up packs of kids crafts, wood tombstone and bat cut outs, I painted them with paint I had on hand. I also grabbed a few packs of leaves with long wire stems, perfect to loop and create a hanger to use on the tree.
Our topper came from the dollar store as well, hubz pick, I only insisted I scrape the cheap looking red painted eyes out, I think it looks less cheap this way.
My first trip to the dollar stores I had little plastic pumpkin treat buckets in mind as ornaments and was disappointed when they didn’t have them, however just before we put our tree up we went to a different dollar store and THEY HAD THEM!
Underneath the tree sits a few things I made over the past few years and thank the universe were not ruined. A crate I made to hold candy on Halloween night, painted with Jack Skellington, (another Jack DIY here) a scrap piece of wood that our youngest and a friend made a few years ago ( with my help) of oogie boogie.
Here on a folding stool I painted and distressed sits a floral arrangement hubz made me a few years ago, perfect 80’s vibe to go with my vintage/retro theme.
Up against the wall is a cupboard door out of my childhood home, My brother now lives there with his family, and when he redid the kitchen I had asked for a few of the doors.
My dad didn’t build these however, and when he tore down the basement kitchen I never thought to save some of the ones he had made. They are special almost the same, and this one I painted with back paint and added a knob which I hang a pant hanger from it for printouts.
You will find this printout at the end of this page, it’s a quote from one of my favourite Halloween movies-Halloween Town.
My nice laser printer broke and I replaced it with an inexpensive ink jet, the ink is running out, argh its always running out I WANT MY LASER BACK lol. next year I plan to print this off at staples and probably all of my Christmas ones.
I plan to add small nails or some hardware to the door so I can hang a rag garland at the top, if not in time for Halloween, Christmas. I also want to build a crate to put the door up on and have more area space underneath it for more décor.

Your Halloween tree is adorable. I have a ton of plastic canvas, I need to make something with them. I usually just use them for my handmade baskets as handles. https://ourlittleredhouseblog.wordpress.com/2018/04/25/diy-paper-napkin-baskets/
My daughter asked me the other day if I thought it was too early to put up her Christmas tree…I just gave her a look. In this family we are fanatics when it comes to the holidays. Great ideas, I know how hard it is to do DIY posts, so thanks for sharing.
